World Soil Day - why we need to protect our peatlands from erosion

For peat's sake, it's time to get our hands dirty and halt soil erosion

Nearly 15 % of Scotland's peatlands are affected by peat erosion. This is is very bad news for our efforts to respond to the global climate emergency. The Scottish Government has put into law the toughest targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 75% by 2030, and to net zero emissions by 2045. With nearly a quarter of our land area covered by peatlands, restoration of 50,000 ha of degraded peatland areas by 2020 is one of the targets the current Climate Change Plan is hoping to achieve.
